We have a couple 4k flat panel TVs around the house and without a doubt everyone likes the front projection 1080p the best. I know all the push is for 4k here on the forum but all my content OTA TV, streaming TV and BD are 1080p or less still and my eyes might not be as sharp as some of the younger guys although my eye doctor still tells me I’m 20/p projection looks great to me. When they went 4k and to a smaller 1080 chip that wobbled to make 4k is when they started having trouble with CR I’m told. 65” RGBRGB projectors did pretty good with black levels actually contrast is more what we are talking about. Viewsonic and BenQ I know both have one there may be others. They still make similar RGBRGB 1080p DLP. If black is your only driver or your main driver I don’t know if you would ever be 100% satisfied.Ĭlick to expand. It is no longer made it is a Viewsonic Pro 7827 HD. There is a new generation that developed their standards of image quality based around flat panel displays and I think that is some of the debate over all of this. There is a softer quality to watching a less bright image in a totally dark room that is hard to describe but you know it when you see it or at least some of us do.įor those reasons I like FP over screens that emit images and I get my black as best I can thru room design. Placing a huge theater sound system behind a smallish image just doesn’t complete the illusion of film-like for me. Then there is factor that a big screen commands big sound. It is part the shear size of the image flat panels are not yet at, and sitting closer to a smaller image is not the same thing unless you have a way of moving your eyes closer together as we do perceive size. I say film-like for lack of a better word. I differ a little from that belief in that I enjoy the film-like nature of these modern digital projectors when presentation is properly done. That white screen is going to look like something with whatever light is in the room and that’s going to be the best black you will ever get. Your screen is white say and your room is not a total black bat cave. When a projector is trying to make black it is trying to project no light. Projectors do not shoot black out to the screen like they shoot out bright colors or even white. Some great info above, but look at it this way. The photos are about what I see if anything my eyes may even see better blacks. Here is a couple photos of my $500 projectors image in my room that is pretty good. In other words a poor projector in a great room can look better than the best projector in the poorest room. Some projectors do better than others at making black or shutting off the light, But the impact of a poor room will make the greatest impact on black. Now if you are watching a movie where the action is at night and everything is dark the eyes iris is fully open and the perception of black is very poor and the on screen CR is all but lost to our eyes. That would be like watching most sports on our projector. In a poor room with a bright image where a small amount of that image is black we will perceive that black as being pretty good. The total light causes our eyes iris to get smaller and in doing that we have a greater perception of black. I said get rather than see because our eyes see darkness different based on how much light in total is coming into our eyes. Click to expand. Some great info above, but look at it this way.
